DIVERSIFICATION FEATURE BLOG – STAYCATION INSPIRATION: Long weekends in Northumberland

rural diversification, leisure, tourism. rural development, rural solutionsThe second edition in our colleague’s ‘staycation’ blogs is from Sam who recently explored the beautiful Northumbrian coast.

‘In an effort to visit some of the beautiful areas which are on our doorstep, my partner and I have decided to plan several short breaks this year. We have three trips scheduled, the first of which was to Northumberland in May.

From our base in Berwick-upon-Tweed, we planned hikes which would culminate in a trip to one of Northumberland’s many castles. Over three days we were able to visit Dunstanburgh Castle (where we became members of English Heritage, taking advantage of their 15 months for the price of 12 offer), Lindisfarne Priory and Castle, Bamburgh Castle and Warkworth Castle.

We had hoped to see Hadrian’s Wall, however, we didn’t have enough time. We will make the effort to return at some point soon.

Next up we are visiting the North Yorkshire Moors and Dales. Any recommendations are welcome!’
