INDUSTRY NEWS: GOVERNMENT RELEASES NEW ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING INSTRUMENTS
On 24th October the government published statutory instruments regarding environmental assessments and related planning procedures.
While not intended to make substantial changes to current policy, they are aimed at ensuring continued operation of the existing planning system with little to no interruption when the UK leaves the European Union (EU) on 29th March 2019.
The released instruments relate to the following environmental and planning regimes:
- Environmental Impact Assessments
- Strategic Environmental Assessments
- Hazardous Substances Regulations
Multiple small amendments have also been made to other areas of planning legislation to update references to EU law, which will soon be inappropriate. These are to ensure that the system continues to operate in the same manner after the U.K leaves the EU; the changes will not be retrospective, negating the need to re-examine any decisions made prior to the exit.
