Rural Solutions acted on behalf of the estate, preparing the plan by working closely with all key stakeholders and conforming to South Down National Park Authority’s policy objectives.

The estate’s objectives included:
• providing more affordable housing for local people;
• create new holiday accommodation by converting redundant barns;
• turn a grade II listed barn into a monastic retreat; and
• provide a new business park.

Further aims were set out around farming, woodland management, conservation and public access.

It is believed to be the first Whole Estate Plan endorsed as a material planning consideration by a planning authority.

“When the National Park invited landowners to produce a Whole Estate Plan we could see the value that it would bring, particularly given that we are in a period of succession between generations. The completed plan is going to be invaluable going forward, but the process of producing the plan has also helped us to address all manner of issues across the estate.”
