A modern destination for Naturist experiences
Sunfolk, Hertfordshire

We work with clients of all shapes and sizes, and British Naturism – the UK’s leading Naturist membership organisation – was no exception. With a strong vision for redeveloping its Sunfolk site in Hertfordshire, British Naturism approached us to help transform this historic venue into a modern, high-quality destination for Naturist experiences.

Objective
Set within a five-acre woodland in St Albans, Hertfordshire, the organisation’s flagship ‘Sunfolk’ naturist site required upgrading. British Naturism’s vision was to introduce premium facilities, including a luxurious day spa, glamping, camping, and event spaces to create a high-end experience comparable to those found across Europe, all while respecting the site’s rich 90-year Naturist heritage.
'Your input has certainly been invaluable for us in arriving at what we are clear is a scheme for the site which balances our ambitions with what is practical within budgetary and planning constraints.'
Approach
With a constrained budget and big ambitions, the design solution to meet the organisation's vision required innovative thinking. The site, located in Green Belt presented some tricky planning constraints which limited options for volumetric expansion of the built form on site.
A solution was found by opting to repurpose and extend the existing clubhouse - a 1930s timber scout hut - rather than build a new pavilion. To maximise space affordably, we incorporated timber pergolas, expanding the footprint without inflating expenses and the added environmental advantages of reusing existing structures. Our flat-roof design for the extension optimised space while complying with regulations, whilst maintaining an apex roof design on the original building.
Rising construction expenses made value engineering crucial and savings were achieved through design refinements, material adjustments, and innovative choices – such as using treated timber studwork for exterior cladding.

'Feedback from our guests has been very positive to date, and the clubhouse building in particular is proving to be a real asset – providing pleasant, well-insulated indoor space for guests to enjoy when the weather has been less than perfect.'
Outcome
A high-quality, modern, functional venue and welcoming space, which also plays a pivotal role in advancing British Naturism’s mission.
